There are a number of different вЂњlayout algorithmsвЂќ that determine the position of nodes on the graph pane. You similarly might become aware of interesting connections (or lack thereof) in your own network. I know someone else who has a huge cluster representing his former church group who are completely disconnected from his university friends. She did not want to drop these friends, but clearly she did not want to link them to the rest of her life either. She immediately recognized it as her ex-boyfriend and his friends. For example, I know someone who has a cluster of six people who are not connected to everyone else.

Some people have networks that do not show this pattern. Also like most Facebook personal networks, it includes a number of clusters that represent social contexts alongside individuals of high degree and betweenness who are notable or personally important. That said, I have viewed and analyzed many networks, and for better or worse, I can assure you my network is rather normal.
